BEING AWARE OF OUR GENTLE GOD IS THE GOOD NEWS OF THE GOSPEL
Do you ever get the opportunity to talk to people that are involved in other religions?
I go to a food bank now and then. When I go there I talk to the people there. A conversation I often get into with them confirms to me that is the god of religion is very different than the God of Christianity.
In fact, the very term “religion” means man’s attempt to reach god. Do you realize in Christianity there is none of that? We can’t reach God by our effort. We might as well give up if that’s what we’re trying to do.
Christianity is “God chose mercy. We human beings get transformed because of this. Then we respond in kind.” When I’m talking to some people about religion it’s amazing. In religion we see little or no kindness being expressed.
In fact, kindness is not often an intentional value system in other religions. The value system is sacrificing to a demanding deity and a sense of condemnation that just rests on them almost all the time. You can see it almost etched on them.
They have a sense that there’s something greater than themselves, but they think it’s often mean and angry. All we human beings can do is try to serve this distance, harsh deity. Some day it might accept us.
Here’s God saying that we get to be the one that comes up and shows kindness to them and then we just say “Here’s what God is really like. He’s been kind to me. He’ll be kind to you.”
