We were each created to have a father who believes in us and calls us to something. We were created for this. In fact, it is such a longing that if this longing is not met by God, we will try to find the fulfillment of this longing in something else, and it will never satisfy us completely. There is nothing of this world that can take the place of the Father’s embrace in our life. Nothing. No food, no clothing, no amount of popularity, no fancy house or automobile, no other relationship with an attractive human being. We were all created at the very center of our being to be loved by God, and to be embraced by Him.
Now, let’s take a moment and just turn our attention to what happens if we don’t experience an overt, felt approval from Father-God? Does never having this experience mean that God doesn’t love us? No, not at all. it doesn’t mean that God doesn’t love us. It just means that as we pursue our walk with the Lord, we’re going to end up seeing all the things that God asks us to do as some kind of trying to earn love by serving. We will constantly be working for God’s acceptance and approval instead of from God’s acceptance and approval. And this is a very terrible and tragic place to be in life.
Isn’t it amazing? There’s a paradox in walking with God. If this doesn’t become foundational, and the embrace of God doesn’t become normal in our life, what we’ll do is try to earn God’s love by doing things, by performance. So our prayer life won’t be enjoyable. Our prayer life will be a competition or a chore to try to get God’s love. If we could just pray longer… if we could just pray harder.
So the whole idea of what prayer was designed by God to be loses its meaning. It becomes this activity of trying to earn something that’s already ours – same thing with giving. Giving is supposed to be out of a heart of joy, but if we do not understand God’s embrace and love, we’re going to do it to try to buy God’s love. Maybe God will like us if we give this much today.
The whole idea of expressing anything in the Kingdom is an expression that love has touched us, the Father’s embrace has drawn near us, and out of this we give because of the over-abundance of it flowing out of us. God’s love is so satisfying, and meets such a deep longing in our hearts, that once it touches us, we stop having a poverty mentality and enter into an abundance mentality. The abundance of God’s love transforms us to start living this way in this world.
We can go to a hundred seminars on relationships, have a lot of money and any other material blessing, and try to learn to be generous, but we will not be truly and consistently generous until the heart is transformed by a generous Father. We are to get to the place where He satisfies us so completely that everything else is diminished in that satisfaction. We are to get to where it’s not any big deal to do these extravagant things of love anymore, because we’ve been extravagantly loved by a Father.
