There are many levels to love. We will tend to receive whatever kind of relationship we are satisfied having with God. Let’s look at where we can see this in Scripture:
“Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. Here a dinner was given in Jesus’ honor. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him. Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.
But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, objected, “Why wasn’t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year’s wages. He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it.
Leave her alone,” Jesus replied. “It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial. You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me” (John 12:1-8).
HOW DO PROMINENT LEADERS FALL WHEN THEY ARE BEING GREATLY USED BY GOD?
When I first started looking at this passage about Judas, a well-known Christian evangelist who was on television appearing before 1 in 5 people on the planet, with that much world-wide influence, got caught soliciting prostitutes, and it ruined his ministry.
Anytime a prominent minister falls like that, the rest of the Body of Christ asks the same question, namely, “If he has been walking with God, and God’s blessing is on him, how could he do those things?” The second question is usually something like, “How am I going to be able to live a successful, victorious Christian life as a mere layperson if a prominent instrument of the Lord can’t live victoriously over sin and Satan?”
So this prominent minister went through that, and it really had a profound negative effect. In fact, the media at the time just opened up with both barrels so to speak and really let him have it. The media just seemed obsessed with his fall. They talked about it and talked about it some more for quite a while. They beat up on him and really went after him. They seemed to want to even destroy his family life.
So I was praying one day in my prayer closet, and I was beginning to talk with the Lord, and I was saying, “Lord, my goodness. Can anyone make it? I mean, really. Can anyone stand in the day of evil, or are we just destined to be decimated by one thing or the other?”
Then I even asked the Lord this question: “Can any ministry that represents You actually walk in integrity over time? I mean, Lord, is it possible to have a ministry over years, over decades, and maintain our integrity most importantly before You but also before the people, and finish well, or are we just fooling ourselves?”
