THE GENTLENESS OF GOD
Let’s review that there are two emphases or two ways to define the Hebrew concept of Father.
THE HEBREW CONCEPT OF FATHER MEANS BIRTHER AND NURTURER
The Hebrew word for “Father” carries the definition of the birther of something. When we say God is our Father, He really is the Father of all humanity because He has created us all.
But we also have in the Hebrew term father something that carries the definition of nurture. What’s really interesting is God could be for humanity the Father of all creation and yet there are children He has created that are not in relationship with Him and don’t understand His nurturing aspect.
ETERNAL LIFE IS BOTH QUANTATIVE AND QUALTATIVE
For you and I, one of the great inheritances we’ve received coming to the Lord Jesus Christ is that we are not just given eternal life. That is a beautiful and glorious thing. But the reality of eternal life isn’t just living forever, but the quality of life available in knowing God.
This is what eternal life is. When we are introduced to just who God is, He reveals an important idea, “My love is set in the context of understanding family.” Because He wants us to understand family as being so important, He wants to be known as a nurturing father.
As we began this journey, we’ve been taking different aspects and saying “Well, if God is like a Father, a good father is like…” Depending on what type of father we have had when we were being raised, we project that – good, bad or in-between – on how we see God.
