How do you recognize God’s voice?
Begin with Scripture. God’s written Word provides the foundation for knowing His character and testing what you believe you’re hearing. Plumbline Ministries teaches that the Holy Spirit continues to guide believers today, and that personal impressions must be weighed rather than treated as equal to Scripture (2 Timothy 3:16–17; 1 Thessalonians 5:19–22).
How do I distinguish God’s voice from my own thoughts?
The way a thought feels is not enough to establish its source. Bring the impression before God in prayer, compare it with Scripture, and seek wise counsel. A strong feeling, repeated thought, or sense of peace does not make an impression infallible. Grow in discernment with humility and a willingness to be corrected.
How do I test an impression biblically?
Ask whether it agrees with Scripture, honors Jesus, and leads toward love, truth, and faithful obedience. Scripture calls believers to test spiritual claims and weigh prophetic words (1 John 4:1–3; 1 Corinthians 14:29). Avoid pressure to act immediately, and involve mature believers when a decision carries significant consequences.
Where should a beginner start with prophetic training?
Start with knowing God through His Word, learning to test impressions, and serving others in love. Prophecy should strengthen, encourage, and comfort people (1 Corinthians 14:3).
