When defending the Christian faith, one of the most important truths to remember is this: we are completely dependent on God for life, knowledge, and purpose. This is not just a theological statement—it is a foundational worldview reality.

1. The Creator–Creature Distinction

The Bible begins with the unshakable truth that God is the Creator and we are His creation.
Psalm 100:3 says:

“Know that the LORD Himself is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.”

This distinction shapes everything:

  • God is independent – He needs nothing from us (Acts 17:25).

  • We are dependent – Every breath we take is a gift from Him.

  • God is sovereign – All creation exists for His glory (Romans 11:36).

When engaging unbelievers, we are not just arguing for God’s existence; we are proclaiming the reality that life itself is impossible without Him.

2. Dependence in Knowledge

Paul writes in Colossians 2:3:

“In whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”

This means:

  • All true knowledge finds its source in Christ.

  • Apart from God, human understanding is fragmented and incomplete.

  • Our reasoning, logic, and moral sense are gifts from Him.

Apologetic implication: Every worldview that denies God must borrow from His truth just to make sense of reality.

3. Dependence in Sustenance

Paul tells the Colossians:

“He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.” (Colossians 1:17)

This is not poetic metaphor—it’s a literal truth:

  • God not only created all things; He sustains them moment by moment.

  • Without His continual upholding, the universe would collapse into nothingness.

  • This means our existence is not autonomous; it is continually reliant on His will and power.

4. Dependence and Humility in Witness

A Christian apologist who grasps man’s dependence on God will:

  1. Speak with humility – Recognizing we don’t defend God as if He were on trial; we bear witness to His truth.

  2. Rely on Scripture – Knowing it is the ultimate authority, not human cleverness.

  3. Pray for God’s work in hearts – Since only He can open blinded eyes (2 Corinthians 4:6).

Our defense of the faith is not about proving our intellectual skill—it’s about pointing others to the One on whom all life depends.

Pull Quote:
“The Christian worldview begins and ends with God—not man. Our dependence on Him is not a weakness, but the very foundation of truth and life.”

Summary

The Christian worldview is anchored in the Creator–creature distinction: God is independent and self-sufficient; we are dependent and sustained by Him. This truth undergirds our approach to apologetics, shaping our humility, reliance on Scripture, and confidence in God’s power to reveal Himself.

Key Points:

  1. God is the Creator; we are His creation.

  2. All wisdom and knowledge are found in Christ.

  3. God sustains all things moment by moment.

  4. Our apologetics must rest on God’s power and truth, not human reasoning alone.
